Responsibility is a thing that many people can wrap their brains around, but few really understand. A person might avoid taking responsibility their entire life without ever even noticing it. Responsibility is one of the things that allows for trust. When a person knows they are responsible for something small, and they take care of that small thing, it is likely they will be given greater responsibility for greater things, and so on and so forth. This is such an ingrained idea in society that it feels wrong when things do not go that way. It feels like a person cheats when he or she is able to skip climbing the responsibility ladder, but this is happening more and more often. Perhaps due to the huge number of college students and graduate school students, suddenly the job market is flooded by people who are qualified and overqualified for positions based on nothing but their education. A degree is fine and dandy, but the fact remains that those who have been working their way up will resent the people who are suddenly trusted with more responsibility because of education. It is important to note, however, that education is itself a form of accepting and taking more responsibility on oneself. Instead of giving up, an individual has persevered through years of profitless education, believing that they would one day be paid back for their hard work in academia.
